A Recurrent Theme: Packing

Today we um, well, packed.

Not just packed exactly.

Organized is more like it.

If we were just moving domestically, the movers would show up, load up our stuff, and we'd be off.

However, because we are going overseas, we have to get things into various sections of "stuff." These sections are:
  1. Boat stuff (HHG -- household goods)
  2. Plane stuff (UB -- unacompanied baggage)
  3. Storage stuff (things we will store until we return from overseas in 2-4 years)
  4. Personal stuff (stuff we are going to take on our persons to Turkey.)
This requires a lot of organization. Tons.

The HHG guys will come first. We have been warned repeatedly and to great excess that you cannot just let them into the house and expect them to pay attention to sticky notes or color codes. Everyone has told us that you need to section off entire rooms that they are not allowed to go into.

You can imagine how problematic it would be if the storage guys took stuff that should be in HHG. You have to make sure the right stuff goes to the right place.

So, as of right now, our guest room is HHG. The closets in the guest room are storage. The big hall closet is UB. The boys room is UB. Our room is HHG. The linen closet is UB. The storage closets are HHG. The kitchen is, well, who the heck knows what right now.

You get the idea.

Lotsa shuffling. Lotsa moving stuff from one place to another. Lotsa organizing.

Lotsa pictures too. They tell you to take pictures of EVERYTHING to document your "stuff."

Today we made huge progress as illustrated in the picture above. This is, or, err, was, our guest room. It is now becoming a sectioned off room full of HHG stuff.

Nine days until the first movers come!

you just blew my mind with that. i don't know if we could pull it off. in fact i know we couldn't if brandon was involved. i would have to get rid of the kids for a couple days, but i think i would be throwing most of our stuff out on the street for strangers to just take as they drove by. i have been trying to go through things to get rid of now. brandon has problems with this. he hates when i get like this. it scares him. he has reason to be.

LOL YES it is SO TRUE that they will not necessarily pay attention to sticky notes.

Watch out for garbage as that can and will be packed, it has happened and not so happily as a "surprise" when you receive it months later. :)

We had a neighbor that would sell everything but a few plates, beds and a grandfather clock each move. Mind you they lived so sparse that there wasn't a whole lot to move to begin with but the movers sure loved them.

My movers always hated my kitchen the most as I like to cook and have appliances, dishes, etc.

Good luck!

Yes, definitely make sure you have emptied all the trash cans before they arrive. In one box I unpacked I found used tissues (yuck)! I've also heard of people getting their diaper pail with diapers in it (double yuck).

Are they doing all three packs the same day (HHG, Storage, and HB)? We had ours on 3 separate days. It is a very good idea to designate the different areas of goods! I pray it all goes smoothly for you.

If I had to do it again I honestly don't think I would have stored as much. I mean honestly if you haven't used it for 3-4 years do you really want it when you get back? Other than some yard tools and small kitchen appliances I think I shouldn't have kept as much.

oh my. I so remember sticky notes, "sea freight," "air freight," and prayers that everything would arrive. i can't believe you're off so soon!
