ok I have a question about housing on base. Do you have to pay for it or do you just get it? Then my next question is, if you don't have to pay for it what is the incentive to update it and keep it up? If you can't sell it or gain any equity how are people motivated to keep them nice and remodel?
Great question! No, you don't pay for it. It is free. If you don't want to live on base, you can take the stipend (which varies by base) and buy or rent off base. Only married officers can live on base (there is no single officer housing). This means that most everyone has a family.
Most people don't do any remodeling to the inside of the house but yards are a big deal. If you do not keep up your yard you can actually be kicked off of base and get in trouble with those in charge of the base. You have to maintain your yards.
As for doing nice things, like JB did in on our yard ... people just like to do it. They have a "yard of the month" and people really put effort into making the base look like a nice place.
The base community is very "different" -- sort of like a "Leave it to Beaver" 50's community. Kids walk around by themselves, neighbors congregate on the street to talk, and block parties occur often -- it's a very nice homey feel and people want it to look nice.
