Julie & Julia

Great thing about seeing a cooking movie? Your husband comes home, inspired. He's making something for dinner that smells absolutely glorious. I have no idea what it is, but I know I am going to love it.

Julie & Julia was a fantastic movie. One of the best movies I have seen in recent memory. I strongly recommend it to anyone and everyone. Fairly family friendly but probably more of adult interest. It was especially fun to watch as a tall woman. Julia Child was a very tall woman in her era and it was a fun part of the movie. I could feel her attempt to meld into a life she always felt too big for.

It was also a movie which dealt with infertility. I had no idea that would be the case. I had no idea that Julia Child was childless.

The inclusion was slight. A second glance when a woman walked by pushing a stroller. A letter from a pregnant family member. Whoever wrote those scenes must have dealt with infertility. They were incredibly well done. A perfect representation of scenes that played themselves out in my own marriage, in our home, many times during our five year journey. I could feel her pain so vividly. Both JB and I could.

To my friends struggling with infertility, my personal opinion is that while the scenes will cause you to tear up, this is a movie that will not hurt you emotionally. I think it will provide you encouragement as to the happiness that can exist in marriage despite the heartache that can accompany it. I think it will encourage you to see Hollywood so accurately represent an infertile woman's pain. They really got it.

All right, on to less deep stuff . . .

Our babysitters were wonderful. The boys (including Scrubs) were all behaved and loved on a lot while we were gone. It was a great afternoon out with my husband. We realized that other than our brief dinner out while in Colorado, this is the first time we have left both boys and gone out together since Brittney R. still lived here! Way too long.

For now ... I must move into the dining room. Dinner is served!

Bon appetit!

Yeah, a cooking movie would never inspire my husband. Unless it was to eat! :)

It seems there's a LOT of movies lately that are not infertility-THEMED but that contain infertility/mc nods. Which, honestly, I think is extremely GOOD. We saw "The Time Traveler's Wife" this week and it had a m/c subplot. Hard to watch, but you know, it's honest.

Glad you had a good time!

Oh-I saw that movie yesterday afternoon! It was soooo good. Meryl Streep nailed it. Wow, I just deleted several thoughts because they are spoilers. I also read everything I could about the blogger whose work helped create Julie and Julia. Definitely interesting reading.
And I loved the cinematography with the Paris story.
Today, I made homemade brownies and chocolate macaroon cake, in response to seeing all the butter in the movie yesterday.

Wendi,

Thanks for your review as it gives another point to this movie that I believe is going to be at the top of my list to watch. Always good to hear others take on the movies that are currently out there or past for that matter.

As I read your post it occurred to me that movies as great as they are everyone will always walk away with a different take on them. As I am a huge fan on not only Nora Ephron but also Julia Child, I am very interested in seeing this movie. I hope it doesn't take too long for it to come out on DVD, usually the only way I get to see a movie these days. So.... I have been watching and reading the reviews on this movie. While Barbara Walters who knew Julia quite well, her take on the movie was that it really did capture the "love" affair that she had with her husband that she described as intense w/passion. I found that an interesting summary. Another review I read was more on the story of how Julia came to the love of cooking late in life, I believe they quoted her late 30's.... that made me laugh as I am past that to me that wouldn't seem late in life. :) The other review that read was more towards the girl that did the blog about cooking Julia's recipes.

"Marley & Me", that movie I took away something totally different as well. No training = destruction! I found it interesting that with all the reviews that came out on that movie none of the reviews that I read or watched addressed the fact that there was no "crate" training and no neutering of that dog until he was totally out of control. I think the movie is cute and sweet despite that fact.

Again, your review was another great look at the films. Thanks again!

The movie "Up" (Pixar animation) also deals with infertility (pregnancy loss, I guess) in a very tactful and gentle way. I think it is mostly to explain why the main character, a curmudgeonly old man, has no family. Matt at Maybe Baby summarized it well: http://www.maybebabyblog.com/?p=1102
