Dutch Milk

One bad thing about living in Turkey. Hormone-free milk (which JB insists we buy*) costs, hang on to your hats everyone. Four dollars for ... a HALF gallon. Yes, that is EIGHT dollars a gallon. (But they only sell milk in half gallons here.)

Fact: we go through approximately one half gallon of milk per day.

So needless to say, milk is liquid gold around these parts. And when I poured two full cups last night and forgot to give them to the boys and forgot to put them in the refrigerator and had to pour them down the drain this morning, it hurt my feelings very much.

Too bad milk can't be shipped in a care package.

*The Dutch** part of me finds this terribly painful. I have practically begged JB to let me buy the cheap milk -- to such an extent that when I bring it up now he changes the subject before the sentence gets out of my mouth. (He feels very strongly about hormone-free milk.

**Dutch are, stereotypically very strict Calvinists (don't work on Sundays) and very cheap. Question: How do you confuse a Dutchman? Answer: Offer to mow his lawn for free on a Sunday.

just a thought -when we lived in Indonesia we drank powdered milk -all that was possible for most of our years there til recently....i'm wondering if that is hormone free -we drank Dancow (i believe a Swiss powedered milk?) might be worth looking into cuz we got used to it and it was reasonble....tante Jan
Dutch joke --i really laughed ...i remember question being whether it was wrong to make other people work on Sunday by eating out and mom not having to work that day...now i crave those quiet sundays of childhood tho!

My husband is dutch and i am getting used to this in our family. Oma and Opa live in a retirement community and when someone moves out they keep EVERYTHING! and then they try to give it away to the grandchildren.

What brand of hormone-free milk are you able to buy there? I will send coupons if and when I get them. =)

I love the joke! I'm gonna have to remember that one. My dad will get a kick out of it.

By the way, did you hear of the new Dutch tire? It not only stops on a dime, but picks it up too.

People around here look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them we usually don't make plans to go anywhere or do anything on Sunday's. I just tell them that that's how I grew up. When I was a kid we would, on rare occasions stop at KFC for dinner on Sunday's. But we joke and say we were Lutheran's that day (we would only do KFC if we had been visiting my mom's church that she grew up in which was a Lutheran church).

Joy, it is Organic Valley. I WOULD LOVE COUPONS (If they exist.)

I feel your pain! Phillip is on rice milk and it usually costs $3.75 per half gallon. We go through 1 gallon every three days. And that is just one 3 year old who loves milk. If we leave it out too long I get very upset!

I see from their website that you can go online and download some coupons from them at http://www.organicvalley.coop/coupons/

When you fill out the information they even have a listing for the following: Armed forces AA, AE, or AP. So that you can put in your information for military commissary too.

Hope this helps out and possibly get some coupons sent to you.

I'm with JB on this one! I buy Organic Valley for Kaia, too! Hans and I don't drink enough milk to warrant the spendy kind, but for her, I fork over the dough! I have NEVER seen coupons for it, though! I pay $6/gallon here in Roch. I would love to know if such coupons exist!

I feel your pain! Milk (and everything) is alot more expensive here in New Zealand than it is in the States. My husband's family is Dutch and very Dutch. Coming from a Hispanic family it takes a bit of getting used to.

I love reading about your family adventures in Turkey, Wendi!

Here is another source. They send a booklet once every three months or so, but usually they include organic valley product coupons.

Also, are you going for organic as well as hormone-free? Because Smart Balance for example is hormone-free, but not organic. Just wanted to clarify. Not even sure if you can get that kind there. There are much higher-value coupons for Smart Balance is why I ask.

Also, you could order some off of ebay.

I'll keep my eyes out for you!

one more thing. If you write to or email Organic Valley and tell them you love their products and ask for coupons, they probably will send you some.

Tante Jan, I have never seen the powdered milk. Not a bad idea!

I used that coupon site anonymous! Way cool.

Joy, the choices are very slim here. We have only one choice of hormone freek milk. That's it. The Commissary is about 1/3 the size of a normal grocery store back in the states.

OK. Just wanted to make sure since I have tons of $2 coupons for the Smart Balance. It's on sale this week at Publix for $2.50 so gallons for $1!
