I just finished reading ...

I am a HUGE Francine Rivers fan and was excited when wandering through her section at the library, to see a new book of her's that I hadn't read.

Francine Rivers is by far the best Christian fiction writer there is. To me that cannot be contested. Her books Redeeming Love, The Scarlet Thread, and the Mark of the Lion series are truly all at the top of my all-time reading list. She is in a league all her own.

Bridge to Haven definitely doesn't hold a candle to those titles. Not even close.

That being said, despite the fact that the book started slow and one of the themes just didn't sit well with me, about halfway through, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I truly did care for the characters and wanted to see them through to completion.

I think it is important, if I am going to give a recommendation to explain what bothered me about the book. There is an adoption story during the beginning part of the book that really did not sit well with me. Upon the conclusion of the book, I realized why it had to play out the way it did, and I also recognize that this was a different era, when adoption didn't work like it does now. But I was still so unnerved about it that for many chapters, I debated just giving up.

I also thought that Rivers put some pretty racy themes into the book. This isn't new for her. She has never shied away from romance or mature themes. However, I felt that this one nearly crossed the line in a few spots.

So all in all? I give it 3 out of 5 stars. If you love Francine Rivers, I'd definitely read this one. However, if you haven't read her before, start with one of the books linked above, and leave this for later.

I agree with you, I was so disappointed in this book. The racy stuff just wasn't what I wanted to read in her books. There were also people wondering if it was really Francine that had actually written this book because it was so different. Will definitely keep reading her stuff, but was disappointed in this one.
