We Bought a Farm: NOT Defrosting

The thing I love most about Tennessee is that everything is mild. The seasons are all mild -- especially the winter. Spring is wonderful. Fall is wonderful. And Summer, while hot, is very handle-able. There isn't a lot of natural disaster to fear either. We don't get hurricanes. Earthquakes, while possible, are rare. And where we live, a tornado is very unlikely. It truly feels like the best of all the worlds with not too much of it any of it.

In the nearly three years that we have been running the farm, we've never really battled winter like we are right now. We don't invest in water heaters for our animals because we very rarely have issues with it. There are a few dozen days during the winter that the hoses are frozen. But by midday, they are warmed up!

Not this time.

We now have a week where we aren't looking at getting a defrost. (We are hopeful that Wednesday afternoon will warm up enough to let us regroup, but we aren't holding our breath right now.) This means that we can't get water to our animals. JB's parents are gone for about three and a half weeks, and we don't have any wwoofer's here. We had Veronica for ten days, and our friend Annie from Knoxville has been spending some time with us, but we're basically on our own here in these parts.

And that is a lot of animals and children and not a lot of grown-ups!

Thank goodness JB was off work for this battle. The kids and I have been filling up buckets from inside the house to take around to the animals. What a pain! While totally doable, it is definitely not sustainable and we can't wait for the warmer temperatures that are always around the bend here in Tennessee.

Minnesota ... you are not for me!
