The Interiorista: Fabrilicious

Decoration is in the details. It is also in the well thought-out and balanced execution of all the elements that conform your design.

Fabric will be the secret ornamental weapon that will allow you to play with subtle or pronounced visual effects making your decor unique.

Using fabric to decorate a space is an inexpensive way to add color, pattern, texture and personality. You could display your fabric choices in curtains, drapes, pillows, comforters, throw blankets, tablecloths, runners or tablemats. Fabric will allow you to add unexpected pops of color to a room or revolutionized your senses with an intricate used of colorful patterns.

Decide what effect you are trying to accomplish! Are you looking for an elegant and simple yet colorful room or for a more elaborated and impactful one?

Mixing colors and patterns isn't always an easy task. To help you obtain a charming and cohesive design that combines several colors and patterns at the same time, follow these basic steps:

1. Use three different fabrics. You could use just one color in three tones or three completely different colors. Use your color wheel to help you make wise color combinations.

2. Use a solid color, a stripe and a small-medium scale pattern. You could also follow a pattern on pattern design using three printed fabrics in different pattern scales.

3. Make these three fabrics have at least one color in common if you use different colors.

4. Distribute the fabrics following the 60/30/10 rule. Use your favorite fabric for 60% of the room (use solid fabric for a subtle effect and busiest for a more dramatic one), and the other two fabrics for the remaining 20% and 10% of the room.

You could certainly use other combinations, but these are great basic rules to get you started!

Decide what fabric you will use for a particular piece of furniture, drapes, pillows, etc., and transfer your ideas to your mood board to have a clear picture of what you are aiming for.

If mixing patterns overwhelms you but you want to add a punch of color to your design, use solid colors on your big pieces and choose colorful accessories like pillows or throw blankets to add pizzazz.

Don't underestimate the beautiful impact splashes of color will bring to your space through the smart use of fabric!

Compare prices in all your fabric stores to get the best deals! You could find lovely textiles at stores like Joann fabrics, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Ikea, etc., or order online at those stores or these other ones: onlinefabricstore.net, fabrics.com, westelm.com and spoonflower.com.
Companies like Pottery Barn will send you fabric swatches to check the fabric look and quality before purchased or to have a scrap to use on your mood board.

If you are on a strict budget, use bed sheets and garage sales to lower the cost of your fabrics.

Also, get to know your local small stores. Most of them provide upholstery and sewing services to get that special fabric you love so much in a particular piece of furniture or pillow. If you live in the western mass area, I recommend you to check Osgood!

Hope you find these tips helpful. Don't be a stranger! Would you share with me your fabric combinations on the comments below? I'd love to see them!

See you next week,

                       Besos,
