Some of you have been asking how Scrubs is adjusting to being here. I thought I would take the time to give a little update on our four legged best friend.
He did have a tapeworm. JB took him to the vet. Everyone on Base and at the Vet had already "heard" there was a new Dalmatian on Base, and apparently Scrubs was on his best behavior while he was there. They gave him a one pill treatment for the worms. We'll be checking his, ummm, stool, to see if they disappear over the next few days.
He is still not eating very well. We are not sure why this is. Back at Eglin, I fed him twice a day and he scarfed down his food both times. Now, I feed him in the morning, and we are lucky if he eats that by the end of the day. We are not sure if this is because: (a) he doesn't feel good (b) he doesn't like the food (c) he's being snobby and wants me to "fix it up" with some extra peanut butter or something, which I've tried and still this doesn't always do the trick. Dalmatians, and Scrubs in general, usually sucks his food down as soon as it is served. So we are keeping an eye on this. His weight is good -- 78 pounds. So we aren't too worried.
He is having a little trouble adjusting to the sound of the new doorbell. (It makes his ears perk like crazy and he starts barking a bunch.) But with some cheese and other snacks, he is getting it down. Back at Eglin, we had a "place" that he would go in our house when someone knocked at the door. We've had to find a new place here and try to retrain some of these behaviors. But he's catching on quickly. We are working on him not running out the door anytime it is open, and he's catching on. We are also working on him waiting to go up the stairs so he doesn't try to beat us to the top and knock us over. He has been successfully staying out of his kennel when we leave the house which is very encouraging.
There are also seem to be a lot of different smells here as he is peeing on every tree he can find and smelling the ground like crazy. He has met tons of new people and has seemed to like everyone. He is always a bit hesitant when he meets a new male for the first time. Just takes his time. But once he meets you once, or if you are a girl or a kid, you are in the club forever.
We've also met quite a few people (mostly those JB works with) who have already told us they would love to dog sit. A few are people who had to leave their dogs behind because you can't bring a dog if you live in the dorms. Or a few others who just love dogs in general. So I think we will have plenty of options when we leave.
Overall, Scrubs is adjusting fabulously. We are so glad to have him with us. He truly is a member of our family, and it wouldn't be the same without our "Stubby" here to take care of us.

Sorry to hear scrups has a tapeworm. Really watch his kidneys and urine since lack of poor appetite can be a sign something is wrong. You may have to give him bottled water if you don't now.
We've had 5 Dals, and we really watch that aspect of their health.
