Two Family Homeschool: Candy Experiments

Halloween looked very different for us this year. We decided that because the year IS different, we will embrace different. So we bought a bunch of candy, called our friend Troy in Florida, and did some science experiments together via FaceTime!

We all decided to dress up for the day to make it extra fun!

We spent $0 on our costumes. We just pulled stuff out of Aunt Hannah's dress-up box and let the kids be creative!

If you are interested in the experiments we did, here they are:

  • Make a Skittle Rainbow (Very fun! Very easy!)
  • Floating M&M letter M's (Easy to do. It took a little longer than we thought but worked well!)
  • Candy Acid Test (We did a very simple one of this just using sour skittles. It didn't bubble quite as much as we thought it would.)
  • Dancing Gummy Worms (this didn't work as well as we had hoped it would.)
  • Mentos Eruption (I had never seen/done this before. It was great fun but not super easy. They recommend a diet soda because it is less sticky. I didn't do that. Maybe I should have.)
  • Growing Gummy Bears (We are planning to do this one overnight.)
  • Disappearing Candies (We pulled some out after 10 minutes. But 30 minutes really let you see it. The water actually broke it down the most BY FAR!)

Here is Troy! Gryffindor all the way! Here is one of Troy's videos showing the dissolving of candy corn! And here is us doing the same thing at our house!

We snapped this photo during the lesson. So wonderful to have technology. Troy is an only child so the COVID-confinement has been extra tough.

Eoin!

Abigail!

Sidge dressed up as FAST FOOD.

Baby Theo was a turtle. The kids jokingly referred to him as a little "Turd."

Cutest little Turd I ever did see.

This lady. One of my very best friends. We are so different and fit so well together. Here she is with her little turtle.

Here are our five girls. Abigail went as an Indian princess, Ana was a random something, Hannah was a little African princess, Kari was a Minion, and Genevieve was a butterfly.

The big guys with the little guy.

Oldest and youngest of our homeschool group.

This gal is so creative and artistic. I love her style. Kari as a Minion.

Good friends and princesses together.

Abigail was an Indian princess. John did her makeup. She said she wished she had black hair!

Cutest little butterfly.

Love this Cat in the Hat. He had another Cat in the Hat in his hat.

Daddy did her make-up. Her dress was very "African" looking so she wore boots and tried to go as a child of Africa!

Our group. (Isaac did not dress up and preferred to not be in the pictures. I don't push pictures.)
