We Bought a Farm: Good Morning from Hannah!

"Hi everyone! This is me, just this morning, taking a picture for Mommy. She asked if she could take a picture of the outfit I picked this morning, and I decided my belly needed to be in it too. Yes, I pick out my entire outfit and put it on -- this includes my own diaper. I do not allow help from anyone unless something is inside out and I can't get it even after working on it for many minutes. And my shoes? They are always on the right feet. Even though my brothers and sister can't do this, I have it down!"

I wanted to tell you about something very fun we did this weekend. On Saturday, Daddy was supposed to drive to northern Georgia to pick up three new pigs for our farm. (One is a boy pig who they say will make girl pigs.) But at the last minute, the woman who was selling them was able to meet us just an hour away. Daddy was going to go, but he really needed to move some of the animals, he worked the next day, and he was running out of daylight. So he sent Mommy and I. We bought a really big truck last week to replace the truck that threw a rod. It's REALLY big. But Mommy has learned to drive it. So she loaded me up, we drove about an hour, and she backed the pick-up right up to this other lady's pick-up and we put three pigs in the back of the truck!

Mommy and I are a good team. I did a good job eating all the legs off my animal crackers and she did a good job getting the pigs home quite alive and quite cute! My biggers brothers and sister named these pigs: Dalmatian, Spot, and Two-spot (which Mommy said we would change to Tupac.)

We hope you had as fun of a weekend as we did!"

Sunday Sermon

Here's a nugget I pulled out of the sermon today at our church. This is so very true.

"Change doesn't come easy. It comes hard because change comes with a cost. People want change, but they don't want to change ..."

"Embedded in this word repentance, the Bible has the key to real change. Two factors: (1) Feeling sorry before God for what you have done wrong and (2) turning your mind and heart toward His truth. If you don't get those two main components ... there is no hope for truly changing. You will continue to create a world around you that is based on your human will-power."

I remember one time when we were vacationing in Germany, an old man came up to JB and me and our three little kids. We began talking, and he found out that we lived in Turkey. The man asked if we spoke Turkish. "Well," JB began. "My wife speaks Turkish. She's been learning it. But I just don't have time."

The old German shook his head and said, "Now sir you should know that we only have time for the things we are passionate about."

JB looked at him and nodded. "You are right," he said. "I am not passionate about learning Turkish. So I'm letting my wife do it for me."

And JB never studied Turkish again! From that point forward I did the talking anywhere we went in Turkish. JB just decided that he wasn't passionate about it.

Discipline is hard. Change is hard. And if it is a spiritual change, it requires true repentance in order to have a chance of truly changing.

Wise words.

First Composition

Abigail has been enjoying watching her brothers take piano lessons. Yesterday, she asked JB for a piece of paper and decided to write her own song. She did this completely on her own with no prompting. She then proceeded to put it up on the piano and play it! So neat!

We Bought a Farm: When the Rains Cease!

When it rains on the farm, it really takes a lot out of you. But ohhhhh when it stops, we just can't wait to get back outside. It was in the 40's, but the sun was out, and it was just glorious. Thursday was Joni's last full day and it was a beautiful one!

This kid just LOVES being a farmer. His favorite thing to wear are these big black winter pants with suspenders. He puts them on everyday.

These two get along so well. They very rarely fight. Just best buds. Especially when it comes to Legos.

These two fight non-stop. And also play together a ton.

Love this little guy.

Sweetness.

Joni got Abigail a bow for Christmas too.

She doesn't know how to use it yet, but she is so proud to be just like her brothers!

Good form!

Check out Abigail -- just holding out the arrows!

This hat cracks me up because if the light hits it right, it's like a walking disco ball.

Watching the ducks and geese.

Hannah in an outfit she picked out and put on by herself -- down to the socks and hat.

And here is a video of Joni, feeding the sheep!

Friday Funnies

Hannah: "What's that?"
Me: "It's a bra."
Hannah: "Oh, it's a bra."
Me: "Yes."
Hannah: "I don't have a bra."
Me: "Why not?"
Hannah: "I don't know."
Me: "When will you have one?"
Hannah: "When I have a baby in my belly." (No IDEA how she connected all that.)

****

Me: "Hannah it's time for you to go to bed."
Hannah: "No. It's not."
Me: "Yes, it's time for you to go to bed."
Hannah: "No. Never."
Me: "Yes, you are going to bed."
Hannah: "No, I'm actually not."

*****

After going out for a big lunch after church on Sunday, we told the kiddos that they could have anything they wanted for dinner (within reason) as I was not cooking. The three olders started debating between grilled cheese and peanut butter and jelly. Hannah brightened up and said, "Ohhhh. I'm having a cupcake!"

*****

Whenever I get Hannah up from her crib, I often call her silly names. "How's my little pumpkin? How are you little peanut?" On this particular day, I said to her, "How was your nappy little jellybean?"
Hannah: "Good. I eat them."

*****
Daddy: "Oh, what a pretty dress. Is that your dress?"
Hannah: "Yeah. It's kinda my dress. But it's Abigail's."

*****

Me: "We are going to pick Joni up from the airport after Hannah gets her shots."
Abigail: "Is she getting shots to make her stop hitting me in the face?"

*****

JB came home from work and Hannah looked at his scrubs and said, "Daddy! You take your work off."

*****

Me: "Who wants to help me make some jello?"
Sidge: "I don't. But I'll help eat it."

Dollywood!

Thanks to Grama watching Hannah for me, Joni and I were able to take the three older kiddos to Dollywood for their "Smokey Mountain Christmas." The park is open from 2-9pm so that there is plenty of time to see all the beautiful lights they have out.

We recently purchased an annual membership, and I was excited to try out the park for the first time.

Joni and Sidge on the tram on the way in.

I had no idea that kids were afraid of Ferris Wheels. Abigail was totally game. (She is always is.) But Sidge did NOT want to ride. He kept saying, "I'm going to have a freak out." Isaac tried with Joni but got off right away. In the end, only Abigail liked them. Okay, and if I'm being honest, they really aren't my favorite either. They are a bit scary!

The park was SO empty. We walked on every single ride, and if there wasn't anyone in line, they offered to let the kids ride again. I think they did this roller coaster three times in a row.

Next up? This crazy spinning thing. I did NOT want to ride, but Abigail wasn't allowed to ride without an adult. Isaac was fine going by himself.

What a cutie.

Oh what we do for our children...

Sidge loved it.

Childhood!

How great is this?

There were tons of fun little rides for little kids.

Love my girl.

Sidge!

Sidge's all-time favorite animal is the Bald Eagle. Dollywood has tons of them -- and even a whole store with eagle paraphernalia.

We had such a wonderful time!

I loved this park -- especially how much Christ was still in Christmas here.

The OTHER side of adoption

A recent prayer of mine has been
for God to direct me to people who need Him.

And that I could be his hands and feet on Earth.

In short, I've been praying that He will direct me to someone who needs a kind word, a hug, a gift ... whatever it is. I've told the Lord:

If you tell me what to do and who to do it for, I will do it.

The other day I was pulling out of a parking lot, and I felt that still, small voice speak to me. It's hard to know for sure that it is God sometimes. Is it just me thinking it? Is it just me telling me what to do? I'm not sure you can ever know for sure, but I feel that if you are really trying to hear God's voice ... you will know when you are being nudged.

There was a woman sitting in the car next to me, furiously writing something on a piece of paper. I had already pulled out of my spot when I felt God telling me to pull back in and go and talk to her.

So I did.

I handed her a small gift and just said, with courage I wasn't sure I had, "God told me to give this to you."

She started sobbing and within seconds she was telling me everything in her life that had recently gone wrong.

But here is what is even more amazing ... the main thing that was plaguing her and causing her so many tears was that her step-daughter, addicted to drugs, had had a baby the night before, and she was placing the baby up for adoption.*

And this woman -- a grandmother -- was grieving. She was grieving the loss of this little baby in her life. She didn't want her daughter to place the baby for adoption. She didn't want to watch her granddaughter go to another family to live.

All I could think was: Okay God. It really was YOU talking. You aren't going to send just anyone to this woman's car. You pick me. An adopted mom. A woman who can encourage her that placing this baby is okay. I can tell her that I am an adopted mother who loves my adopted son with every fiber of my being. And that this baby will have a good home and a good life.

And so I did. I told her that I would pray for her. Pray for this baby. And that this was GOD'S BABY. This child would grow up loved and cherished, and that she had to remember this child doesn't belong to a person. She belongs to God. Whatever her daughter decided to do, God would be there.

As we said good bye and I walked away, I became keenly aware that adoption, while beautiful and wonderful, is not a one-sided coin. While there is one family celebrating the arrival of a new life into their home, there is often another family grieving the departure. There are painful circumstances that require a parent to place their child into the arms of another. It isn't as simple as I or anyone else make it sound. There is grief. There is hardship. There is sadness. There is longing. There is pain.

And there is beauty. And love. And happiness. And beauty.

I thank the Lord for allowing me to be His hands and feet on this particular day. But more than that, I thank Him for the reminder of the families on the other side of this wonderful gift.

*I wrote on my Blog the other day about how I wanted to expand on the phrase "give them up." It is truly just semantics, but I encourage you, when discussing adoption, to use the phrase "placed" instead of "gave up." Biological parents are NOT giving up their children. They are GIVING their child the best life they can. It is a very clear distinction that I believe needs to be made in our society.

Year 2: My own very unofficial Halloween awards

Last year I started my own very unofficial Halloween awards for family dress up. I know I am about a month behind, but I wanted to share my results from my second unofficial Halloween awards. These are simply done by people's pictures they post on Facebook.

Here they are!
GRAND PRIZE:

The Pleasant family! I mean they have something for the stroller! And I think that is a carved pumpkin on the porch. Just so that you don't get the wrong idea, I KNOW this family doesn't have it altogether, but I'm impressed nonetheless!

FIRST PLACE:

Great job Deanna! The only reason you didn't win the grand prize is because the dog wasn't included somehow. (Just kidding!) Very creative!

SECOND PLACE:

The Beaudoin family got EVERYONE in on this one. So impressed. Our family would never do a family dress up. It's just not in our DNA. Although Dan cheats a bit since you can't see his face. That makes it much easier to participate.

THIRD PLACE:

I have to wonder if any of my friends even recognize this family? Leave a comment if you do! This gal always comes up with original ideas and is NOT afraid to follow through on it. Well done chica!

We Bought a Farm: Rain

Rain + Farming = Mud.

I have decided that I am really not in love with farming when it is raining. Taking care of the animals in the rain (aka "mud") just really zaps you. Walking the hills in pouring rain with buckets of feed in fear of slipping down a muddy embankment is exhausting.

"Running out" to quickly feed or water means changing my clothes when I get back in. The dog is muddy. I'm muddy.

And the kids can't go outside without getting muddy which I just really don't have in me to deal with right now.

The good part is, of course, things are getting watered. I also don't usually have to water the animals nearly as frequently.

But just not a fan of mud and manure mixed with mud.

Whole new ball game.

Star Wars!

We are very excited about the new Star Wars movie coming out. Isaac has turned into quite a piano professional in our home, and he was excited to combine his passion for piano with passion for the movie -- courtesy of our piano professional -- Joni!

Christmas #1

We are breaking Christmas up into thirds this year. We are doing Christmas with Joni this week, we are doing Christmas with Kitsteiners in December, and Christmas with my family in South Florida when I drive down in January. Joni arrived yesterday for a five day visit and we opened our presents the MOMENT Daddy got off of work. We had a blast and got some good pictures in the process!

Love these dresses Joni got for the girls! So many girls dresses are sleeveless and don't work for the cold months.

The boys got some great PJ's!

These pictures below cracked me up. Each one is like a comedy show!
