Review: Homeschool Complete

Are you a new homeschool mom wondering if this is too hard for you to do? Do you not have a clue where to begin? Are you on a budget that won't allow you to go with an intense curriculum that costs a ton of money? Would you like to know what to teach your elementary student with nothing more than a few inexpensive products and a trip to your local library? Then Second Grade Complete from Homeschool Complete  could be the program for you.

I have always tried to homeschool my kids inexpensively. My means of doing that has been to "work" for the Schoolhouse Review Crew and do reviews in exchange for my honest opinion of that product. Or I find free products online. However, this means piecing together a lot of different puzzle parts to make a full curriculum. It's hard. It's exhausting. It requires a lot of work. (Add to that the fact that you are homeschooling many kids who are totally different ages and you have a whole lot of "planning to do.)

And in the end, you are often wondering: Did I cover it all?

When I talk to other homeschool parents, without a doubt the number one question they are fretting over is: How do I know I haven't missed anything?

And that is exactly what Homeschool Complete is designed to do. It is designed to provide you with CONFIDENCE. It will take the GUESS WORK out of the equation. Homeschool Complete provides and entire semester curriculum for you and your child. This all-inclusive curriculum is literature based and also Biblically based. In addition, the cover every topic without you have to piece things together and do a bunch of planning ahead of time. Content included in this all-inclusive curriculum include:

  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • P.E.
  • Fine Arts
  • Character Development
  • Bible
For the purpose of this review, I had the opportunity to review the Second Grade Complete Curriculum. However, if you read the reviews from other Crew members by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post, you can actually see reviews from all grades through Fourth Grade. In addition, other reviewers covered Unit Studies as well!

Okay, how much will this cost me?
Before I tell you anything about Homeschool Complete let me breakdown the cost for you. I am doing this first because I think this is the part that can win people over. This program will cost you around $340 for an entire year of schooling! If you want to just do the digital download (which is what I did), you can actually use the program for under $250! If you want to order by semester it will run you about $200 per semester. This means that you basically have everything you need for an entire year of schooling for no more than $340. This means that you can homeschool your child for about $20-$30 a month!)

Seriously? I won't need anything else?
Well, you will need to get some books from your public library. You may also be asked to get a spiral notebook for your students to journal or some basic craft materials. But truly, nearly everything you need is included in the curriculum.

All right. How does the program work?

You visit the website and buy the program. Then you receive the curriculum in the mail. (Or you download your digital program if you choose to go that route.) Depending on which "Bundle" you buy, you will receive a Teacher's Manual and Student Workbook. (There are options to receive more  "bonus" materials as well.)

And then you jump in. The Teacher's Manual walks you through what you need to do step-by-step and the Student's Workbook has all the pages your child needs to learn along the way.

I was incredibly excited to review the Second Grade Complete curriculum being as my Abigail (who is sort of in-between first and second grade) has been very challenging being as she doesn't "fit in" with the other eight kids we are schooling. We have three kindergartners and three fourth graders and two middle-schoolers. But we only have one "Abigail" who is sort of in-between the other groups. So I worked specifically with Abigail on this curriculum.

C'mon Wendi. Break it down even more.

I loved this program. And I think you will too. I really want to make sure I paint this very clearly for you so you can see what every penny of your money will get you. Here's a detailed breakdown:

The 604-page Digital Download that I received began with a Table of Contents
Next up? The Introduction which includes an explanation of the types activities you'll find in the curriculum. If you can't zoom in on this, I want to share a little of what the Introduction includes. It explains that the information surrounds thematic units and provides step-by-step instructions for parents. It reiterates that all supplies and low-cost and includes books that can be borrowed from your local library. The parent is also guaranteed that there will be activities for the auditory, visual, and tactile learners. "The lesson plans are designed to keep you organized, and it is recommended that during school hours you concentrate on school alone."
After that, parents are given a School Year Overview so they can see what they will be covering during what month of the year.
Pages 5-10 include all the things your student should be able to do by the end of the school year. This is broken down into the major subject areas (i.e. Language Arts, Math, Social Studies etc.)
After some discussion about Daily Lesson Plans, Organization and Planning, Teaching Procedures, Handwriting Guidelines, and Calendar Skills, it was time to jump into our first thematic unit.

Even though we were doing this during Semester 2 of the school year, we decided to start with the first unit: Johnny Appleseed.

Here is a picture of Abigail working on one of her worksheets in her Unit.
Here is a picture of Abigail reading through one of the books I easily requested at our Public Library in order to do this review.
Abigail and I would sit at the dining room table together and work through each assignment. Here is just a smattering of things she did as we worked through the unit:
  • Read a list of words with the short "a" sound.
  • Match numerals with the written out version of the word.
  • Add.
  • Circle a number that doesn't belong in a pattern.
  • Create an apple pattern using a sponge. (An example of a very inexpensive item you might have to purchase to do the project.)
  • Observe a variety of different kind of apples and fill our a chart about them.
  • Recognize vowels.
  • Read sentences.
  • Use a word in a sentence.
  • Learn how to use greater than and less than signs.
  • Add using a number line.
  • Various P.E. assignments
  • How to read a calendar.
  • How to explain what the weather is outside on a particular day.
So are you saying you loved this product?
I am absolutely saying I loved it. I think it is an incredibly affordable option for people and truly covers everything. It eliminates the lack of confidence that so many struggle with!

And if you want to give it a try, you can get 10% off until 3/31/2019 by using the code CREW2019.
