We Bought a Farm: The Blue Cochin

This is an example of a blue cochin. (This is not our bird but shows how beautiful they are and their "pants"!)

We have 140 laying chickens on our farm right now. But there is only one blue cochin. (We got more as chicks, but only one made it to adulthood. It's common for birds to not make it to adulthood for a variety of reasons.)

I've been working really hard training our dogs with the chickens and with all the animals. And they've been doing a fantastic job. Anytime I take them out with me, they don't mess with the chickens at all. Arabelle is especially fantastic with them.

However, take the dogs out together and it is difficult for them to control their impulses. And put them outside of our there acre "yard fence" without me there and forget it.

And this morning, somehow, the dogs got outside the fence. Sidge had just let the chickens out for the morning, and when we realized what had happened, it was quickly obvious that they had gotten a hold of a chicken.

I was so disappointed to see that it was our blue cochin. Of all the chickens, why this one?!

John made the decision to try and stitch the chicken up. Her wounds weren't horrible, and he really felt if infection didn't take over, she might be able to make it.

Tymen snapped these photos of John doing surgery on this girl. Normally, we truly don't take so much time for a chicken, but we decided to go for it with this one. She's now in a kennel in our bathroom to stay warm enough minus so many feathers. Really hoping she hangs on!!

Add this to the things I never thought I would do in my life. #Ican'tbelievethisismylife
