Hunting Squirrel

I have said it previously on my Blog and to my friends. I don't like hunting. I don't plan to ever hunt. If I needed to hunt to feed my family, I would hunt. I also understand that we must hunt to control the population of some animals. If we did not hunt coyotes, for example, farmers, everywhere would lose entire flocks to coyotes. (And did you know that coyotes will naturally increase or decrease their litter size based on how much predation is occurring against them! Isn't that crazy?)  This means you could never erradicate coyotes. (We, in fact, leave the coyotes on our farm we see alone. We take good care of our land which gives them a large supply of rodents and other food to eat in our woods. As long as they leave our ducks/chickens/sheep alone, we see no reason to shoot them.)

That being said, on our farm, if you shoot an animal, you eat an animal. (Unless we have to kill something that is a predator like a racoon for example.) So if Sidge shoots squirrel, he must cook and eat the squirrel.

I have made a decision that I will not eat squirrel. I just don't want to. I have no good reason other than I have other things to eat, and I don't want to eat my equivalent of a rodent. No thank you.

Yesterday, Sidge shot a record five squirrels in one outing. He came home to gut them and clean them. I happened to be watching second-cousin Theo for a few hours, and he had a fantastic time quizzing Sidge about all things Squirrel.

Neither of them knew they were being video-taped. It was incredibly fun to listen to their discussion. You can watch the video above or you, are welcome to listen to ehse shorts of Theo talking to Sidge: Video 1 and Video 2
