Capetown

It is Friday around 2:20 p.m., and we have arrived in Capetown safe and sound. It was a long journey. We got to the Abuja airport yesterday at around 4:30 p.m. only to find out that the 7:40 p.m. flight we were scheduled on would be running late and we would miss our connection if we took that. Somehow Dr. Chris worked his magic and we got on the 5:40 with Dr. Fishcher and his son Peter. The organization in the airport was atrocious so we relied on Dr. Chris to scoot us from section to section. I still have no idea how we got on the flight. The 5:40 p.m. flight wasn't allowed to land for quite some time so all five of us, drenched from sweat and sitting in middle seats tried to relax as we circled the skies and then landed in Lagos -- what should have been just a 50 minute flight.

Dr. Chris was not there in Lagos of course so we had to battle customs ourselves. This was interesting, but we eventually got through. We got great seats for the the 5 hour and 3o minute flight to Capetown because the plane wasn't very full. We slept for a few hours!!! However, when we got to Capetown, we had to get our luggage off and then recheck because we were "entering" the country. This caused us to miss our connection. They put us on standby, and we were relieved to find out that we all would be on the 9 a.m. flight to Capetown. That was a blessing.

We are moved into our "home" for two days in Capetown. We got our rental car but it is a stick, on the opposite side of the vehicle, and JB accidentally hit a curb as he tried to make an opposite turn up an extremely winding street. No one faults him as it was VERY hard driving. Not a great start, but we are in good spirits. The girls have headed out to Robin Island, Ajit is going to venture out a bit on his own, and I am looking forward to spending the evening with my best friend settling things with the vehicle and just being together.

I have so much to say about our departure from Nigeria, but I will save all that for another time. For now, we are here, and I love you all!

dear wendi,
i am weeping -i finally got on line here in Indonesia and read your blogs. I thought -i needed a blog all these years -i would experience these things you write for 4 years at a time with a letter here and there to others -come home and basically be expected just to fit into american life -sometimes no questions asked -and just set that part of my life aside for a year -and anyway how do you tell experiences like yours after four years of it building up --it's just in there -but your blogs released so many feelings inside me --when you said "where they were born deterimines one hand or two" i thought -not if the body of Christ were doing our part around the world -and the decision whether to stay or return to Indonesia has all those struggles involved...and as you described the hospital i realized part of my "break" was while the war was going on, and we were checking some translated portions and Tonga got Dengue fever and Ed wasn't here and i had to put Tonga in a hospital just like that -as we pay the bill but don't have insurance for him for the kind of hsopital i would go to -and i watched him in all that dirt, and someone near him died and then they wanted me to give permission for a blood transfusion "or he will die" and i knew i couldn't trust the blood!....I feel like i have a real kindred spirit in you, knowing you've had these experiences -tho you always were one!! :) and we can even hold hands together now shopping --oh and my friends would wonder if ed and my marriage was okay when we got home because we'd gotten so used to ignoring each other in public that we did the same when we got home to US and in big or small groups! We will just have to find a WEEK to catch up on everything -i am loveing your blogs!!!!!xo Tante Jan
