Chicken Processing -- Day 1 of 2

300 chickens on a Sunday.

Processed 175 of those chickens.

Total adults: 9 (Kotynski family, grandparents, Anni, and my friend Jessica and her daughter who helped keep all the people in the house in order!)

Total children: 10

Started at 7am. Finished processing all the chickens by noon. Finished with all the packaging by 3pm. Finished with most "incidentals" by 5pm.

I don't love processing chickens.

But I do love getting all of our chicken FOR THE YEAR done in just eight weeks here on the farm.

This coming Saturday will process the final 125.

We keep 150.

We sell 150.

Those 150 we sell pay for the 150 we eat for the year.

We try to make it a party. We eat junky food and play music and just try to make it the best time we can.

One of the funnest things is to see the kids able to do harder and harder jobs each time we process. Sidge totally took over the heads/feet/gland cut-off station. And Gabe moved into eviscerating this time. In addition, Isaac was a ROCK STAR at chicken catching while the girls really helped with quality control (getting all the feathers off before they go into the chill tank.)

Here's a video of Sidge doing "his thing." (This video is not for the squeamish!)
