Thunder Dog (Review and Give-away)

The title Thunder Dog is a bit misleading. While there is a dog in the book, and dog lovers will enjoy reading about Michael Hingson's amazing guide dog, Roselle, this story is really about the man who that dog guides.

Michael Hingson is an amazing man. He worked in one of the World Trade Center towers. He was there on September 11, 2001. He was guided out by his dog.

But interwoven into the story of his miraculous escape on that fateful day, is the story of Michael growing up in a world not made for blind people. Long before regulations and technology and guide dogs were the norm, this man faced blindness as the result of medical care after his premature birth. Somehow, without much support or guidance, his parents realized that he needed to be treated just like a regular kid.

So he rode a bike and rode the bus and walked to the corner store. He learned to love God, love people, and love dogs. It is impossible to read this book and not find yourself touched -- both by the reminders of what our country both gained and lost in September of 2001 but also of the resiliency of both people and animals when faced with incredible obstacles.

P.S. As I often do with my book reviews, I want to share this book with someone else. So please leave a comment on this blog post, and I will randomly pick a number and give my copy of this book to someone else.

In exchange for my honest review, Booksneeze has provided me with a free copy of this book.

This sounds like a great book! Even if I'm not the winner, I think I'll see if our library has a copy of this.
